Review: City of Bones by Cassandra Clare

When Clary Fray heads out to the Pandemonium Club in New York City, she hardly expects to witness a murder. Much less a murder commited by three teenagers covered with odd markings. This is Clary's first meeting with the Shadowhunters, warriors dedicated to ridding the earth of demons-and keeping the odd werewolves and vampires in line. It's also her first meeting with gorgeous, golden-haired Jace. Within twenty-four hours Clary is pulled into Jace's world with a vengeance, when her mother disappears and Clary herself is attacked by a demon. But why would demons be interested in an ordinary mundane like Clary? And how did she suddenly get the Sight? The Shadowhunters would like to know....

                                                            This book has received 3/5 stars!

Alright, okay! I've been putting off reading these books for such a long time, but I finally dove into the first one, City of Bones, and here I am! I gave this book 3/5 stars, because the end of the book was what disappointed me.

I love the way Clare built the world. I love the idea of shadowhunters, and demons, and the forsaken. I hear a lot of people complain about how Clare took Harry Potter, and just essentially changed around the names. I didn't feel that way about this book at all when I was reading it, and believe me, I did search for the resemblances whilst I read. I don't particularly recall anyone in Harry Potter going around and slaying demons as a job, or searching for the mortal cup that turned regular men into shadowhunters. I just didn't see that.

The character of Clary was iffy with me. On some occasions, she was independent and wanted to go her own way with what she had to do, and she wouldn't listen to anyone. And she certainly didn't have anyone telling her what she could and couldn't do. But on other occasions, she was extremely needy, and unable to fend for herself. She was the damsel in distress a little more than I would have enjoyed. She constantly needed Jace to be there for her, and that annoyed me.

The character of Jace was amazing. Now I know that I might get a little crap for this, but I love when main male characters have this arrogant air about them, and they constantly bully the girl they like, and in all reality they're just scared little boys who need someone just as much as some people need them. I don't know why I love this so much, but I just do! I guess it's just my hamartia. If you get my drift. I just loved how much he cared about Clary, and how afraid he was to show her how he actually felt. Up until the end..then I just wanted to hit him SO bad.

~~~Insert witty and sarcastic spoiler~~~
My FAVORITE part, was when the two main characters, Luke and Leia, find out that the super evil, super bad, Darth Vader, is their father! And that Luke and Leia are actually brother and sister! Even after they have made out!..oh wait...that was Clary and Jace..
This is the ONLY reason the book lost two stars, and that is a sad point. Like, come on, Clare, you can do better than that! And if you're going to plagiarize, at least use a less obscure piece of work, yeah?
All in all, I did enjoy this book. I will be reading City of Ashes, and typing up a review on that one as well. So stay tuned!
Read and Conquer!
